Our ROCOR Parish History in Peoria

Holy Transfiguration is one of the youngest Orthodox parishes in Central Illinois, inviting visitors to help shape its next chapter.

2012

A small group of Baptist converts to the Russian Orthodox Church founded the mission, sharing worship space with an Anglican parish and receiving pastoral care from Fr. Thomas Janikowski and other visiting clergy.

Later

The mission moved to a small storefront on Sheridan Road, hosted the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon several times, and was served by Fr. Gabriel Monforte, Fr. Andrei Papkov, Fr. Innokenty Reichert, Fr. Raphael Tadros and other visiting priests.

2021

The community bought the former Church of Christ Science Reading Room in Peoria and remodeled it as its parish home.

October 2024

Services were briefly paused.

January 2025

The parish reopened and has since focused on fellowship events, parish workdays, shared meals and visits to other Orthodox communities in Illinois.
